Sailfish – Double hook up!
In fact, circle hooks are among the more recent additions to the Northwest halibut-fishing scene, first appearing in the Alaskan long-line fishery in the early s after many years of proving its effectiveness in southern tuna fisheries. Bob Trumble, formerly of the International Pacific Halibut Commission, once told me that the change from J-hooks to circle hooks turned the commercial halibut fishery on its ear, causing such an increase in the long-line harvest in such a short time that scientists at first thought that halibut stocks had exploded.
Once a halibut had a circle hook embedded where it belonged, there was little chance it was going to escape. A baited circle hook attached to a long-line just lies there on the bottom and waits for a halibut to come along, inhale the bait, turn away and slowly tighten against the line until the hook nestles into position and the fish is on to stay. So, at least part of the answer to the long-argued question of whether circle hooks or J-hooks are better for halibut fishing depends on the temperament of the angler.
Once it seats into one of those locations, it tends to stay put.
HOOK’N UP FISHING charter – The Boynton Beach fishing has been great for the last few weeks with steady catches of kings, Mahi, sailfish, bonita and blackfin tuna. We have caught fish on all of the last 15 trips we have had and everyone enjoyed the fishing.
Some islanders fish for a living, some islanders fish for fun, some islanders sell fish in their restaurants and some islanders prepare bountiful fish-rich meals for their families. One thing is for sure, the various Hatteras Island fisheries have an impact on those who are blessed to call this place their home and we love sharing them with our friends and neighbors. While the docks are always abuzz with fishing action, sharing with you is exactly what we aim to do. Check out our fishing report below to stay tuned on what’s being caught, what they’re using to catch them and the fisheries that are ever-changing!
From Sea to Plate One of the most exciting things about fishing is the catch itself. That glorifying moment when the hunt becomes luctrative and you’re fighting nature’s ancient battle of man vs. One of the most of satisfying things about fishing is when your catch is sitting before you in the Happy Frozen New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This did not take Long..
All were around 20 to 25 Pounds and they said they lost way more then they kept. We have Been Catchin, When they Go.. But when they go It’s Been Kings and Wahoo..
Ft. Lauderdale Fishing on the Hooked Up
The Caroline returned with 18 ling cod and limits of rockfish for 13 anglers while fishing local waters. They have some limited room in the upcoming week. While there were a few kings caught here and there last week, salmon fishing remained somewhat slow according to Todd Fraser from Bayside Marine. One thing always stays the same for fishing in the Monterey Bay and that is, every year is different.

Newport and Narragansett are hot spots, and these fish are now showing up along the Massachusetts shore, too. Ed Parisi, a bonito and false albacore fishing expert from Tsunami Fishing Tackle, shared his thoughts on how to hook one of these speedsters Monday night at a RI Saltwater Anglers Association meeting. They rely on their sight a lot when feeding so the more you have in the water in terms of line, leader thickness and swivels the greater the chances are that these fish are going to see it and not bite.
I use a pound braid with a to pound fluorocarbon leader with direct tie offs and no swivels. I have never had a breakoff using this weigh line as long as my drag was set properly. The public comment period on these proposed changes ends September Upper Bay closed to shellfishing Recreational and commercial shell fishermen beware.
The state Department of Environmental Management announced that all waters of Upper Narragansett Bay bounded by the DEM range marker on Conimicut Point to the center of the tower at Nayatt Point to the northern tip of Prudence Island to the southern tip of Warwick Point have been closed to shellfishing effective at 1 p. The closure will be lifted when tests show the water is clean.
This can happen at any time so call the DEM shellfish hotline at for up-to-date information. The sewer authority added chlorine for disinfection during the overflow, which ended at

False albacore will hopefully follow right behind. Both of these species are hard to catch but have thrilled local fishermen with their furious runs, stripping line from light tackle and giving anglers a memorable fight. Many times, false albacore and bonito are mixed in with striped bass and bluefish.

I had a great day of fishing with Ben Koller of the Hook-up Outfitters. His instruction was spot on, the fishing was wonderful and the overall trip was one that everyone should have an opportunity to experience.
After meeting the rest of the guides and seeing their entire fleet of matching trucks and boats it would be very hard to imagine any guide service in the country being much better than The Hook-up Outfitters. I travel the world golfing, but fishing is my passion.
The river is truly a year-round fishery for steelhead. The winter run generally far exceeds the summer run for numbers of fish going home for dinner, but the summer fishery can offer a pleasant experience in good weather. The Sandy, which begins on Mount Hood and drains into the Columbia River near Troutdale, passing near Gresham along the way, also is known among recreational anglers for good runs of spring chinook and fall coho salmon. Find an overview of Sandy River fishing opportunities here.
The daily limit currently is three salmon or steelhead in any combination.

Click here to go to our Archive. Friday, June 29 – The ocean is still unsettled with some flat calm wonderful days and some windy rotten days mixed in. It’s summer in Half Moon Bay which means gray skies and warm clothes with temperatures most days in the 50s and 60s, so don’t forget your jacket and long pants The rockfish are still chomping, though, yielding limits to those putting their time at the rail of quality bottomfish and lingcod. Yesterday on Thursday a 20 pound lingcod topped the scales for top honors, and we had 18 lingcod to 12 pounds landed on Wednesday.
A very cool bonus has been the whales that have been on the fishing grounds, with pods of humpbacks and 70 foot plus blue whales giving amazing shows. The whales are cruising along the coastline, too, with humpbacks just yards off the beaches at Miramar just south of the harbor. Salmon have finally shown up in good numbers this week, too, with good numbers of quality fish being landed off the Pacifica area. We’re primarily sticking with rockfishing but we have a couple of salmon trips on the books this month, and are running trips seven days a week.
If you’re looking to join us on a weekend, definitely plan ahead if you can. And last, but not least Wally has been working his way little by little into the wheelhouse of the Queen, and will be ready to take over when Capt.

The first is through the back, generally just before the dorsal. The trick is to go deep enough so that the hook will hold well, keep rigid and not rip out. This is a great rig for John Dory and kingfish. If you go too shallow the hook can rip out, or the hook may turn and go back into the bait when you strike the fish. When inserting the hook insert the point on a slight angle towards the head, this way it will allow the hook to lay flat along the body when the live bait is swimming.
It will also allow you to strike the fish and drive the hook home easily. Most fish will take a livebait head first so the spines of the fish lay flat on the body and it slides down easily. An added plus is that if the fish tries to disgourge the bait after taking the bait, it will in turn catch the point and you will have a solid hook up. The second way is to rig it through the nose, this is a quick easy task, and works really well when the bite is hot and you need to get a bait in the water quickly.
All fish have two small nostril holes above the upper lip. Insert the hook through here.

Some great catches of them were made, on the troll and on livelined bunker. But plenty of stripers are migrating. Last Thursday’s Report Keyport Abundant striped bass were around, but fishing for them was up and down the past couple of days, said Capt. Mario from the Down Deep Fleet. When they were hooked aboard, they weighed up to 35 pounds and were landed on jigs, rubber shads, eels and a little on trolled Mojos. Open-boat trips are fishing for stripers at 6 a.
Follow Down Deep on Facebook page or sign up for the Short Notice List to be kept informed about special blackfish trips that will begin once the bag limit is increased. Leonardo Limiting out on over striped bass on the ocean was the norm with Sour Kraut Sportfishing when trips could fish between storms, Capt. Unders began to mix in, and the fishing was a matter of getting out for a couple of hours when weather allowed, and looking around. The trips trolled Mojos and bunker spoons, and if weather prevents trips from reaching the ocean this weekend, Joe will try to fish Raritan Bay.

When To Fish High tide is an excellent time to catch fish as food is washed into the shoreline areas. Excellent action often takes place immediately before or after heavy storms. Dawn and dusk are also excellent.
One of our customers picked up 3 shorts after dark on IBSP using a black and purple (blurple) SP Minnow with a black teaser. Two fish took the teaser and the other one the plug. Short bass by the bridge and in the Toms River before and after dark last night hitting swim shads, small swimmers and poppers.
By Dave Hurley The recent fresh water push and warmer water temperature may account for fresh striped bass moving into lower Suisun Bay and the return of the sturgeon bite after a few weeks of very slow action. Captain Steve Talmadge of Flash Sport Fishing out of Martinez is the originator and director of the Diamond Classic, and he has been finding much better action for huge striped bass this past week as opposed to sturgeon. The stripers have bit on both tides, and this is the second weekend in a row where the fillets have produced double-digit linesides with two at 23 and 27 pounds last Sunday.
I have been spending the majority of my time getting ready for the derby, and we have a killer raffle arranged with a couple of Phenix rods, two Accurate Reels, five custom rods, a Yeti cooler, and several charter trips. If a child catches and releases a fish, they will be entered into the larger raffle for the big prizes. Information is available at www: John Badger of Barbarian Sport Fishing out of Martinez continues to stay on the sturgeon with second captain Shawn Taylor on the Barbarian II loaded up with six limits of sturgeon on Saturday to bring their total to legal sturgeon since they started targeting the diamondbacks in the fall.
It is important not to take an oversized sturgeon out of the water to measure the fish since there have been citations issued for bank anglers pulling up the oversized fish onto the shoreline. Keep the fish in the water.
Steelhead Fishing in the Sandy River
Multi-species fishing is in full swing. Bass season is open and both largemouth and smallmouth bass are very active in the Grand Rapids area, especially on Pokegama Lake, which is one of the best bass lakes in Minnesota. Panfish are in the pre-spawn mode and can be found in or near shallow water pencil reeds in most lakes around Grand Rapids.
The fishing began to pick up last night after better weather and clearer water. That was the case for fishing for them with soft-plastic lures, mostly Bass Assassins, .
Luck is nothing but the resin of hard work. Feeding a large cuda is no easy feat. Curious and hesitant by nature a Cuda senses the angler from the get go. For this reason spotting a floater that is slowly swimming along from afar could present the opportunity to ring the bell for supper. The angler that can shoot the entire fly line can negotiate a presentation like a stealth bomber. This time of year the trade winds are persistent, making these casts difficult.
The past year and a half or so I have almost given up on the increasingly rapid two handed strip. If I do this method one might want to throw a massive mend in front of the boat in hopes of pulling this cruiser away from the skiff. More often then not a Cuda will chase the fly all the way up to the boat with no dice, but a peering eye.
