Handguns of the Old West There could be a number of starting points for a story on handguns of the old west. I have chosen to start with the Colt Paterson, the first practical multiple-shot revolver using a percussion cap to ignite the powder shooting a round lead ball. The single shot muzzleloading firearms that preceded the Paterson are covered in the story on “Early Muzzleloading Pistols and Rifles” in this website. For more information on the percussion cap firearms and their successors described in this story, the reader is referred to the references listed at the end of the story.
Although the idea of a revolving cylinder had been around for some time, it took Samual Colt’s inventiveness and the emerging technology of percussion caps to make the concept a reality. Colt obtained a patent for a repeating firearm in and began manufacturing the Colt Paterson model revolver in in his shop in Paterson, New Jersey, hence the name of the gun.

There are a number of methods by which a rifle can be dated, or at least bracketed between certain years of manufacture. For the latter, dates of introduction of military arms can be located within the Government “List of Changes” LoCs as can dates of obsolescence and of modification or upgrade to later marks. You may not necessarily find specific date information within the text of particular pages, but often the images of advertisements or catalogue entries contain some dating ‘give-away’, such as the year in which a particular rifle achieved a notable competition score by someone, but which data is in graphic format and therefore not “searchable” by a text search engine.
Do not briefly glance over a page and assume that the information you require is not there. It may not be immediately obvious, but careful observation may provide you with the information for which you are looking. Such research is a major part of the joy of owning, collecting and shooting classic or historic rifles.

I’m hoping that the folks here might be able to help me with a couple of questions before I make the attempt. According to the Remington web page related to the Model Model , there are several grades of this shotgun. The Grade 1 has de-carbonized barrels — and I’m sure that’s not what mine has — but I’m not clear whether mine has “Fine twist barrels” Grade 2 or “Damascus steel barrels, engraving” Grade 3 since there’s no indication of what type of engraving or where it’s located.
I’ve seen pictures of another that was listed as a “Grade 3” and which looked identical to mine. The second question is what I should for ask it. Mine is in really nice condition — hardly a scratch on the stock, no external rust and only a small amount of pitting in the bores. All of the mechanisms work beautifully as well.
Is this considered a “firearm” or an “antique” under the law? The law in my state Maryland says: Antique firearms are exempt from state law. NRA The Model uses center-fire black power cartridges I’ve purchased them but never fired one through the gun and it could theoretically use modern ammunition if the shooter wanted to take the risk of having the barrels blow up in his face!
